CHAPTER 9

Private Investments: Explore Private Debt, Private Equity, and Angel Investing

WHAT'S NEW

Podcasts

She Invests. Host Sylvia Mah, PhD is an active angel investor, entrepreneur, ecosystem builder, and passionate supporter of women-led businesses. She is unabashedly bold in striving to bring female founders to the forefront. This podcast is just one example of the many activities Sylvia uses to showcase innovative, socially responsible female entrepreneurs. In each episode, she interviews female angel investors about how they got involved, their investment thesis, and elements that have helped them succeed or, sometimes, fail.

Additional Resources

How Women Invest. How Women Invest is a venture capital firm and sister organization to How Women Lead. Its goal is to use a large professional network to identify high-potential female founders and provide mentorship and investment to help them succeed.

The Angel Accelerator. Luni Libes founded this organization to fill what he felt was an unmet need: helping angel investors learn the tricks of the trade. The Angel Accelerator is a mix of lectures, workshops, case studies, and hands-on practice offered in the US and other locations around the world. Participants pay a low fee in the hundreds of dollars range and commit to make investments of $5,000 to $10,000 as part of the course. This accelerator is particularly relevant for those who want to invest in start-ups based in Africa, India, and other frontier and emerging markets.

This is a high-risk asset class. Unless you have deep pockets or fully understand the risks, think hard about investing more than 5% to 10% of your total net wealth (excluding your private residence) in private deals. Invest only what you can afford to lose. It is suggested that you start small, do your due diligence, and increase your investment sizes only as you gain experience. You are strongly advised to learn with others or seek the advice of a professional advisor who includes private investing as a service offering.
